DOORKNOB – A Brief History:
Doorknob is the most important band. With 16 studio albums, 4 live albums, 18 “Top 10” hits, 3 movies, 14 Grammy Awards, and the Congressional Medal of Honor – all imagined – the only question left is who will deliver their induction speech at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame once they are eligible in a few years? Probably Dylan.
Formed a super long time ago, Doorknob got huge fast and endured the downward spiral typical of highly successful acts with volatile personalities. Guitarist Derek Cote and keyboardist Matt Dundas have been compared to Lennon/McCartney, Hall & Oates, and those guys from Milli Vanilli. Their untouchable lyrical prowess, innate sense of musicality, and unmatched ability to effortlessly generate hit after hit has gathered them tens of passionate fans who have come to be affectionately known as “Knobbies,” sometimes willingly.
Their genius songwriting partnership led to competition, drugs, lawsuits, angry facial expressions, and disagreeable fashion choices. They broke up, got back together, broke up, released a “Greatest Hits,” got back together, broke up, released another live album, a box set (broke up, got back together), released an anthology, and then Matt said, “I’m never talking about Doorknob again.” Then, they got back together and broke up again. They now occasionally reunite on stage, but sadly have vowed never to release another album. They have a new album planned for 2025.
